Summary
In this poem, the poet mainly celebrates the farmers with reference to his father. Heaney’s father was originally a farmer and the poet took great pride in being a farmer’s son. He thought to himself that one day he would grow up to be a farmer like his father. He will devote himself to agricultural work in the same way as his father used to farm with horses, plows, and strong lances.
The poet used to see his father’s way of cultivating the land and was impressed. He hopes to grow up and handle agricultural work with Plow and Lance. He also said that he wants to succeed his father when he gets old.
