• Death: The central focus of this poem is the death of President Abraham Lincoln. The sailors (symbolizing the American people) see the Captain lying dead and express deep grief. The poet describes the body as “cold and dead,” which reflects the sudden shock and pain of death. Although the ship has reached the harbor, the leader is no longer alive. In the midst of victory, death overshadows all joy.

• Mourning: The entire poem is filled with mourning. On one hand, the poet hears the bells of victory, but on the other, he cries for the dead Captain. The seashore, the crowd of people, and the garlands of flowers—all these symbolize celebration. Yet, in the eyes of the poet, they are covered with the shadow of grief. His steps are described as “mournful tread,” or heavy with sorrow. This represents the collective grief of the whole nation.

• Immortality: Although Lincoln has died, his soul and his deeds are immortal. Every image in the poem—such as the ringing bells and the love of the people—shows that he will live forever in the heart of the nation. The poet accepts physical death, but he believes in spiritual immortality. Lincoln’s name, sacrifice, and ideals will always remain memorable to future generations.
