Discuss the character of Rahima in “Tree Without Roots.” 

Rahima is one of the most mature and deeply felt characters in “Tree Without Roots” (1948). She is the first wife of Majeed. Through Rahima, Syed Waliullah (1922-1971) portrays the sufferings, silence, and inner strength of rural women. 

Simple and Fearful Woman: At the beginning of the novel, Rahima appears simple, calm, and submissive. She is a physically strong woman, but timid at heart. She never argues with Majeed and always obeys him. She believes blindly that Majeed’s power comes from the mazar. The narrator says, 

“She earnestly believes that the source of Majeed’s power is the shrine itself.” 

Rahima cannot distinguish religion from superstition. 

Compassionate and Kind-Hearted: Rahima is kind and generous to the village women. She listens to their sorrows and becomes their voice before Majeed. The following quote shows how she becomes a bridge between the women and Majeed:

“It was Rahima… who could plead with Majeed to help them in their sorrow.”

Though she is childless and sad, she still prays for others. 

Growth and Transformation: As the story progresses, Rahima changes quietly but strongly. Her life of fear and obedience begins to transform after Jamila enters their home. Jamila’s boldness and spirit awaken something new in her. When Jamila suffers, Rahima feels a strange heat within her. She begins to see the falseness of Majeed’s faith and the emptiness of his rituals. The narrator says, 

“The values of religion, wealth, and rituals all seem absurd to this new avatar of Rahima.” 

In short, Rahima’s character grows from silence to strength, from blind faith to quiet awareness. She begins as a fearful wife and ends as a compassionate, thoughtful woman.
