Report on a tragic death due to unpaid dowry

Tamanna, A Young Bride, is Killed Over Unpaid Dowry

Staff Correspondent, Dhaka, December 15, 2024: A heartbreaking incident in Falda, Bhuapur Upazila, Tangail, has once again brought the dark shadow of dowry to the forefront. Nusrat Jahan Tamanna (22), a young bride, is tragically killed allegedly by her in-laws.

The victim, Nusrat Jahan Tamanna, had been married for just eight months to Md. Mokhles Hossain (26). According to her grieving family, the husband and his family had initially asked for a dowry of 3 lakh Taka at the time of the marriage. Tamanna’s father Md. Dudu Mian, a poor farmer, paid 1 lakh Taka by selling his only piece of land. However, the husband’s family continued to pressure Tamanna for the remaining amount. They threatened to murder her if it was not delivered.

Neighbors revealed that Tamanna endured regular verbal abuse and physical violence in her in-laws’ house. “She used to cry often, but no one dared to intervene,” said a local woman, who requested anonymity. The situation escalated last week when Tamanna was allegedly beaten and locked in a room without food for three days. Tragically, yesterday, on December 14, she was found unconscious and later declared dead at the Tangail District General Hospital.

The post-mortem report confirmed multiple injuries, raising suspicions of severe beating. The husband and his family are now absconding. Local law enforcement has filed a case under the Dowry Prohibition Act and is conducting an investigation.

District Women’s Affairs Officer, Rina Akhter, condemned the incident, emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement of anti-dowry laws. “This is a social curse, and we must educate both men and women to stand against it,” she stated. Local NGOs working on women’s rights have also called for justice. “We will support Tamanna’s family in their fight for justice,” said Sadia Rahman, an activist.

Despite the Dowry Prohibition Act of 2018, incidents like this show that dowry-related violence continues to plague Bangladesh, particularly in rural areas. Md. Faridul Islam, the OC of Bhuapur Police Station, told us that the government and civil society must work together to raise awareness and empower women to resist these unjust demands.
