The Victorian Age (1837-1901) is called the golden time for English novels. This age was a time of great change. It was the age of industry, progress, and social problems. Many novelists wrote about these changes. Two great novelists of this time are Charles Dickens (1812-1870) and Thomas Hardy (1840-1928). Dickens writes about city life and social issues. Hardy writes about rural life and fate. Both are famous for their deep stories and strong characters.

 

Charles Dickens (1812-1870)

Charles Dickens is the most famous novelist of the Victorian era. Charles Dickens writes about poverty and injustice. He shows the struggles of the poor. His novels are full of emotions, humor, and social lessons.

A Tale of Two Cities/Love and Sacrifice: This novel is about two cities—London and Paris. It is set during the French Revolution. The story shows the struggle between rich and poor people. The poor suffer a lot. They fight for justice. The novel has love, sacrifice, and revenge. It has a famous character, Sydney Carton. He sacrifices his life for love, Lucie Manette. His final words are famous: 

“It [self-sacrifice for love] is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done.”

In this novel, Dickens also wanted to show the dark side of history. He shows the cruelty and oppression of the rich class. He also shows how the poor people turned into cold-blooded
