In “The Tempest” (1623), William Shakespeare (1564–1616) creates Ariel as a bright and loyal spirit. He is not human but full of feeling. He serves Prospero with magic. He brings harmony, music, and peace to the lonely island.
Ariel’s Nature and Origin: Ariel is a spirit of air. His name itself means “air” or “heavenly spirit.” He once served the witch, Sycorax. Sycorax trapped him inside a cloven pine tree for twelve years. Prospero rescued him with his magic. Since then, Ariel has been loyal to Prospero. Prospero calls him,
“My delicate Ariel.”
This shows his love and trust for the spirit. Ariel is invisible, gentle, and free like the wind.
Ariel’s Services to Prospero: Ariel helps Prospero in all his magical works. He raises the storm at the beginning of the play. He leads the ship’s men safely to the island. He sings songs to Ferdinand and guides Miranda’s love story. He also punishes Antonio, Sebastian, and Alonso to make them repent. His music brings both fear and peace. He says,
