Answer

Write a short note on Humanism.

Humanism: Humanism is a big idea in English literature. It started in the Renaissance period (14th–17th century). It puts humans at the center of thought. It says human life is valuable. It tells people to use reason and learn. Humanist writers write about freedom, morality, and knowledge. According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, Humanism is,

“A system of thought that considers that solving human problems with the help of reason is more important than religious beliefs.”

Learning and Reason: In the language of humanism, learning is important. It tells people to think deeply. It does not depend only on religion. It values reason and science. Many writers like Shakespeare and Milton showed human emotions and intelligence. Their works explore life, choices, and free will.

Shakespeare’s characters, like Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear, think about life, morality, and choices. They are not controlled by fate. Instead, they make their own decisions. In “Hamlet,” Hamlet thinks about staying alive or committing suicide:

“To be, or not to be, that is the question.”

This shows a humanist idea and inspires us to think about life’s purpose.

Focus on Human: Humanist literature talks about people’s lives. It tells about joys and struggles. It tells people to improve themselves. Writers like Thomas More, Francis Bacon, and Ben Jonson wrote about human rights and dignity. Thomas More wrote “Utopia.” It describes a perfect society where everyone is equal. It says education, wisdom, and fairness can improve the world. “Utopia” is still studied today as a humanist vision of justice.

Humanism changes English literature. It gives new ideas about life and wisdom. It makes literature more about real people and feelings. Many modern books still follow humanist ideas today.
