A Machiavellian hero is a cunning, selfish, and manipulative character. Iago in “Othello” (1622) is one of the most complex and dark villains in William Shakespeare’s (1564-1616) works. He is a true Machiavellian figure who believes in using deceit and manipulation for selfish gain. Like Machiavelli’s (1469-1527) “The Prince” (1532), Iago hides his evil nature under a mask of honesty.
Self-Interest and Ambition: Iago acts only for his own benefit. He admits clearly,
“In following him, I follow but myself.”
He pretends to serve Othello but serves only his pride. He envies Cassio’s post and plots for his own rise.
Master of Deception: Iago’s power lies in his ability to deceive. He says,
“I am not what I am.”
He appears honest but is false within. Everyone calls him “honest Iago,” but he betrays all. His sweet words and false sympathy make Othello and others believe his lies. He controls minds by pretending to be loyal.
Cruel Manipulator: Iago’s mind is cruel and cunning. He enjoys destroying others. He warns Othello,
“O beware, my lord, of jealousy. It is the green-eyed monster.”
He poisons Othello’s heart and uses Desdemona’s goodness and Cassio’s weakness for his own revenge. He has no pity, even for his wife Emilia.
Lack of Morality: A Machiavellian man values power, not morality. Iago fits this image. He says,
“I do suspect the lusty Moor hath leaped into my seat.”
Yet he knows it is false. He lies without guilt and kills without feeling.
In short, Iago is a perfect Machiavellian villain. He is selfish, deceitful, and heartless. His clever tricks and cold cruelty make him the most dangerous enemy. He proves that evil can hide behind honesty.
