Characters

Sir Roger de Coverley:  Sir Roger is an honest, gentle, and kind country gentleman. In this essay, we learn that as a young man, he fell deeply in love with a beautiful, clever widow. He admired her both for her looks and her intelligence. Sir Roger tried to impress her with his appearance and wealth. However, the widow was mysterious and never encouraged any man seriously, even though she liked attention from admirers. Sir Roger was so in love that he did silly things—like carving her name on tree bark and buying new horses and clothes just to visit her. He is sensitive and sincere, but his love was not returned. The pain stays with him all his life and shapes his gentle, sometimes inconsistent nature. Even years later, every part of his land reminds him of her. He speaks about her with respect, and you can see that his disappointment made him more humble and thoughtful.

The Widow: The widow is extremely beautiful, smart, and charming. She enjoys being admired and has many suitors. But she does not let anyone come very close. She is proud and likes to keep men at a distance. She often uses her wit and beauty to control the situation. She does not truly fall in love or let any one man win her heart. She is mysterious, knowledgeable, and friendly, but never gives her affection fully to anyone.

The Narrator (Friend of Sir Roger): The narrator is a close friend to Sir Roger and observes his feelings with sympathy and understanding. He notices how deeply the loss of love has affected Sir Roger’s whole life and character.
