Characters

Estha (Esthappen Yako): Estha is the twin brother of Rahel.  He represents silence and emotional suppression.

Rahel: She is Estha’s twin sister. She is a curious and observant person.

Ammu: She is the Mother of the twins. She defies societal norms by falling in love with Velutha, an “untouchable.” She symbolizes resistance and vulnerability.

Velutha: Velutha is a lower-caste worker. He is a member of the Caravan. He is called Untouchable, caste. He works in the Kochamma family pickle factory. He is kind and skilled. He has a love affair with Ammu that leads him to tragic consequences.

Baby Kochamma: She is the grandaunt of the twin protagonists, Rahel and Estha. She is well known for her bitter, manipulative personality.  She enforces societal rules. She is the paradigm of selfishness and hypocrisy.

Sophie Mol:  She is the daughter of Chacko and Margaret Kochamma. Chacko sees Sophie Mol twice in his life. Firstly Chacko sees her as an infant and secondly when she is nine years old. Her death is the central story of the tragedy.

Chacko: He is  Ammu’s brother. He is an Oxford-educated person arrogant, and indulgent in attitudes.
