Characters

Santiago: From a small village near Havana, Cuba, Santiago is an old and impoverished fisherman who has not caught a fish in a long time. Despite his old age and physical limitations, he demonstrates remarkable perseverance and strength.

Manolin: Manolin is a young boy, who loves and cares for the old man. The boy used to fish with Santiago before his parents demanded he fish on a more successful boat. 

Marlin: The marlin is a huge fish—bigger and stronger than any the old man has ever caught.

Fishermen: Although the village fishermen first look down on Santiago because of his long streak of bad luck, they admire the sheer size of the marlin’s skeleton.

Martin: Owner of the local café. Martin allows Manolin to take free food to the old man.

Perico: Although Perico never appears, he provides newspapers for Santiago.
