What do you know about “The Origin of Species”?
“The Origin of Species” is a famous book written by Charles Darwin (1809-82) in 1859. It is one of the most important books in science. It explains how life changes over time. This idea is called “evolution.” Darwin’s book was shocking at the time. Because most people believed that God created all life exactly as it is. But Darwin’s idea showed that life changes naturally. It created conflict between science and religion.
The Theory of Evolution: Darwin’s main idea is called “evolution by natural selection.” He says that all living things, like animals and plants, change slowly over many, many years. This change can create new species. This change happens because some creatures are better at surviving and having babies than others. The ones that survive—they pass their strong traits (like strong legs or sharp eyes) to their children. Over time, these changes create new types of animals and plants.
Darwin studied nature for many years. He traveled to the Galápagos Islands, where he saw different kinds of birds called finches. Each bird had a different beak shape, perfect for the food it ate. This made him think about how animals adapt to their environment.
Darwin also says, a long time ago, humans and monkeys were one species. But over many years, humans changed. They learned to walk, talk, and think better. This is why humans and monkeys look similar. He writes:
“All the organic beings which have ever lived on this earth have descended from some one primordial form.”
This means all living things on Earth came from a single, ancient life form.
Survival of the Fittest: In nature, life is hard, and only the strong ones survive. Darwin calls this idea “survival of the fittest.” It means that only the best-adapted animals and plants live. In this process of surviving, life evolves over time.
