Jake Barnes – The narrator and main character. An American journalist living in Paris. Wounded in World War I, which left him impotent. Loves Brett deeply but cannot be with her. Calm, thoughtful, and loyal to friends.
Lady Brett Ashley – The heroine. A beautiful Englishwoman. Independent, passionate, but restless. She loves Jake, but cannot give up physical love. Moves from one man to another. This causes jealousy and conflict.
Robert Cohn – An American writer and former college boxer. Did not fight in the war, so he feels out of place among the others. Awkward, insecure, and often mocked by friends. He loves Brett obsessively and causes trouble when rejected.
Bill Gorton – An American writer and Jake’s close friend. Funny, carefree, and loyal. He drinks a lot but also shows wisdom. He brings humor and balance to the group.
