Answer

Draw the tree diagram according to the grammar of the phrase structure of the following sentence: “The baby found its mother.” [Sentence may be changed] [NU: 2021, 22] ★★★

IC Analysis/the phrase structure is used in linguistics. It helps to break a sentence into parts. The sentence is split into big groups. Then those groups are broken again. The biggest part is the full sentence. On the other hand, the smallest parts are words or morphemes. It shows how words form a structure. Let us take the sentence, “The baby found its mother.”

Tree Diagram: The tree diagram of “The baby found its mother.” looks like this:

linguistics

Explanation: This sentence can be divided into two main parts. The first part is the noun phrase (NP): “The baby.” The second part is the verb phrase (VP): “found its mother.” In the tree diagram, S stands for the whole sentence. S is split into NP and VP.

The noun phrase (NP) “The baby” can be broken down more. “The” is a determiner (Det). “Baby” is a noun (N). So, the NP has two parts: Det (“The”) and N (“baby”).

The verb phrase (VP) also splits into smaller parts. “Found” is the verb (V). “Its mother” is another noun phrase (NP) inside the verb phrase. This smaller NP “its mother” can be broken down, too. “Its” is a determiner (Det)  and “mother” is a noun (N).

Each box or level in the diagram stands for one part. Bigger parts are joined to smaller parts by lines. Each phrase is divided until only one word remains. This shows clearly how the sentence is built up.

In termination, IC Analysis/the phrase structure is helpful for grammar study. It makes sentence parts clear for learners. But it cannot show deep meaning or context. This method only explains word groups, not everything.
