The Reformation was a big religious change in Europe during the 16th century. It started because many people were unhappy with the Catholic Church. They believed the Church had become corrupted. Many church leaders were corrupt. They took money from people. They sold indulgences. This means people paid money to the Church to be forgiven for their sins.

The Reformation began in 1517 when a German monk named Martin Luther wrote the 95 Theses. This was a list of complaints about the Catholic Church. He wrote:

“To go against conscience is neither right nor safe.”

He believed that people should follow the Bible. People should not blindly believe what the Church leaders said. His ideas spread quickly because of the printing press. The printing press allowed books and pamphlets to be printed and shared easily.

Many people supported Luther. New Christian groups were formed. These groups were called Protestants. Because they “protested” against the corruption of the Catholic Church. The Protestants had new ideas:
