Why does Majeed regret marrying Jamila? [2016] 

Jamila is a rebellious creation by Syed Waliullah (1922-1971). In “Tree Without Roots” (1948), she appears as the hypocritical and authoritative Majeed’s second wife. Majeed marries her with great hope for happiness and children. But soon, her bold and questioning nature shakes his authority. 

Jamila’s Change and Independence: At first, Jamila is quiet, shy, and afraid. She hides her face and avoids speaking. But within a few days, she changes completely. She begins to smile, speak freely, and express her thoughts. Her sudden transformation surprises Majeed. He feels helpless in the face of her bold personality.

Defiance against False Religion: Jamila becomes the only character who dares to question Majeed’s fake spirituality. She openly denies the power of the mazar and calls Majeed’s system empty. To her, his so-called saintly acts are false. Majeed says in fear, 

“She is a snake… her charm is a snare.” 

This quote shows how Jamila’s truth and reason frighten him. 

Challenge to Majeed’s Authority: Jamila also challenges Majeed’s male pride. She refuses to obey him blindly and argues when he tries to control her. Her courage and self-respect make Majeed feel powerless and insecure. He finds her unpredictable and uncontrollable. Her protest turns into a personal defeat for Majeed.
