“Beowulf” (c. 700-750 CE) is the oldest epic poem in the history of English Literature. The author of the epic is unknown. The poem is about a brave warrior named Beowulf. He fights many monsters. It is a story of courage, strength, and honor.

The Story of Beowulf: Beowulf is a strong and fearless hero. He travels to Denmark. There, he helps King Hrothgar. A terrible monster, Grendel, attacks the king’s hall. Beowulf kills the monster by ripping his arm off. Grendel’s mother seeks revenge. Beowulf dives into a deep lake to find her. He kills Grendel’s mother. After many years, Beowulf becomes a king. But a dragon attacks his kingdom. He kills the dragon. But he is badly wounded. He dies as a hero.  

Themes in “Beowulf”: This poem has many important themes. The first theme is heroism. Beowulf shows great courage. He is not afraid to fight. The second theme is good vs. evil. Here, Beowulf is representative of good. The monsters are representative of evil. The battle between them is the main focus of the story. Another theme is fate. People in the poem believe in destiny.
