“Task-Based Language Teaching” (TBLT) is a teaching approach that focuses on using tasks to learn a language. Instead of traditional grammar-based lessons, students learn through meaningful activities involving real-life communication. The goal is to help learners use the language in practical situations. TBLT is an extension of the Communicative Approach/Communicative Language Teaching.

History and Development: TBLT originated in the 1980s when linguist N. Prabhu noticed that students could learn a language effectively by solving non-linguistic problems. This method is considered a branch of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) because it focuses on interaction and communication. 

Types of Tasks in TBLT: TBLT tasks can be divided into focused and unfocused tasks. Focused tasks help learners practice specific language structures, while unfocused tasks encourage general language use. Activities like role-plays, problem-solving, and discussions are commonly used in TBLT classrooms.

Teaching Process and Stages: The teaching process involves stages like pre-task (introducing the topic), task (students perform the task), planning (preparing to present), and post-task (review and assessment). During these stages, the teacher acts as a facilitator, guiding students while they work in groups.

Criticism: This method needs careful planning and skilled teachers to be effective. The tasks must be relevant and challenging enough for students.

In conclusion, TBLT emphasizes meaning, real-world communication, and student-centred learning. It is effective for natural language development inside the classroom.
