The Globe Theatre was a famous theatre in London, England. In this theatre, many of William Shakespeare’s famous plays were performed. It was built in 1599 by Shakespeare’s (1564-1616) playing company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men. The theatre was located on the south bank of the River Thames.
The Globe was a circular or octagonal building with an open roof in the middle. The stage was large and had a balcony for special scenes. In the theatre, rich people sat in covered seats. Poor people, called groundlings, stood in front of the stage. These standing tickets were cheap. So, many common people could enjoy the plays. Shakespeare describes the design of the Globe in “Henry V” as,
“Wooden O.”

The Globe Theatre was very popular. People came to watch plays like “Romeo and Juliet,” “Hamlet,” “Macbeth,” and “Julius Caesar.” People loved to see Shakespeare’s work at the Globe, and it became a popular spot for entertainment. In 1613, the Globe Theatre caught fire during a play. The theatre was rebuilt later. The Globe Theatre was banned in 1642 by the Puritan government in England. The Puritans were a strict religious group. They believed that theatre and entertainment were sinful. The Puritans, under Oliver Cromwell, kept theatres closed until 1660. King Charles II became king in 1660 and allowed theatre performances again.
In 1997, a new version of the Globe Theatre, called Shakespeare’s Globe, was built in London near the original site. Today, people can visit it and watch Shakespeare’s plays just like in the old days.
