Hades is the god of the Underworld and and ruler of the dead in Greek mythology. He is the brother of Zeus and Poseidon. After defeating the Titans, the three brothers divided the world among themselves. Zeus ruled the sky, Poseidon ruled the sea, and Hades ruled the world of the dead.
Hades’s kingdom is called the Underworld. It lies beneath the earth where the souls of the dead go. Though often feared, Hades is not evil. He rules justly and keeps order among the spirits. He ensures that every soul receives its proper place after death.
In The Frogs by Aristophanes (405 BCE), Hades is also called Pluto. He appears as a wise and calm ruler of the Underworld. He allows Aeschylus and Euripides to debate and asks Dionysus to judge between them. He says to Aeschylus,
“…Go, save our city with your noble thoughts.”
This shows his concern for justice and peace.
Hades symbolizes death, but also law, fairness, and moral balance. He is not cruel but firm. His role in Greek mythology reminds people that death is a natural part of life and that justice rules even in the world of the dead.
